Do you really need 10,000 steps a day? Smiling woman in her 50s walking on an autumn path

Is 7,000 Steps Enough? Yes, and Here's How to Get There

10,000 steps a day? Did you know that crazy number came from a Japanese pedometer sold in the 1960s, not from science?

Recently scientists found that 7,000 steps a day gave the same health benefits as 10,000 including lower risk of dying early from heart disease, and even of dementia.

So even 7,000 seems like a lot but here are some ways to get them in:

  • Park at the far end of the parking lot

  • Walk while you're on the phone

  • Take a walk after lunch or dinner (and breakfast if you're retired)

  • Take the stairs

  • Split it into three or four shorter walks

  • Walk with a friend or the dog

Steps aren't the whole story. Add some strength work two or three times a week. Women lose muscle and bone faster after menopause, and walking alone won't fix that.
