Are your knees aching, hands stiff, or have a hip that bothers you in the morning?
Menopause may be part of your problem.
A new report from the International Menopause Society says about half of women in midlife live with chronic pain. The Washington Post looked at why. Estrogen helps control how your brain reads pain signals, and it plays a part in your joints and in inflammation. When estrogen drops, the same ache can feel worse. Add night sweats wrecking your sleep, and the pain gets louder.
Here's what helps:
Keep moving. Strength training helps your muscles and increases joint range of motion. Walking after meals helps with everything and improves your digestion.
Prioritize your sleep. A bad night makes your pain worse, and pain makes for bad nights in a revolving door. Getting night sweats under control can break that loop.
Ask your doctor at your next checkup about any new or worsening pain. Not everything at 50 is menopause. Thyroid problems and arthritis can look a lot like it. Hormone therapy is one option worth asking about.
If a joint is swollen, red or hot, see your doctor right away.
Being sore at 50 doesn't mean you just have to live with it.
