Happy Menopause, Says the Grim Reaper: What's Real on His List and What You Can Do

Vintage comic: the Grim Reaper with a clipboard tells a startled woman in an armchair, "Happy menopause. I'm here to take your energy, libido, mood, memory, and the muscle tone in your upper arms."

Funny, NOT Funny! Every item on that list is real. Energy, sex drive, mood, memory and muscle all take a hit in perimenopause and menopause. Most of it is tied to estrogen and progesterone falling.

Memory gets the least attention. Recently a Dutch study came out showing that the brain changes during menopause by comparing MRI brain scans in people going through puberty, pregnancy or menopause. The brain changes at menopause seemed to be fundamentally different from the others. Half the population goes through this, and the science is only now catching up.

The upper arms are the one item you can fight back on directly. Women lose muscle faster around menopause, and falling estrogen is part of why. Lifting something heavy two or three times a week is the best way to work on this. Dumbbells, bands, a couple of full water jugs. It doesn't have to be pretty. 💪

As for the rest of the list, getting good sleep, walking more, and drinking less wine in the evening will help.

Don't let the Reaper sneak up on you!
