Can't Find Your Estrogen Patch? What to Do Now

Can't find your estrogen patch? Pharmacy out again? Women all over the country have been hunting for estrogen patches for more than a year now, and it isn't getting better.

Demand jumped after the FDA dropped the black box warning on estrogen, and the new ob-gyn guidelines will make even more women eligible. Manufacturers can't keep up. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is now pressing the FDA for answers, and the FDA still hasn't called it an official shortage.

Hormones aren't the villain. Don't skip your treatment, and don't panic.

So here are a few things that can help:

  • Call around. Local and mail-order pharmacies don't all have the same stock
  • Ask your doctor about an estrogen gel or spray instead
  • Ask whether estrogen pills could work for you in the meantime (they aren't safe for everyone, like women with a history of blood clots)
  • Report it to the FDA at drugshortages@fda.hhs.gov, and let the patch maker know too

If you're stuck, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you go without.
